Think twice before tossing your plastic bottle into the recycle bin: reuse it to start your garden seeds!

In May, we taught the women at our partner agencies how to turn a plastic drink bottle into a self-watering seed or plant starter.

We showed participants how to cut and punch holes in the bottle to have a cotton wick that pulls water from a reservoir into a cup that holds the soil and seeds, keeping the soil moist to get new little plants going!

Participants planted seeds to grow herbs or beans, and they got to plant some mint or flowers. A participant from Center for Women in Transition said she learned “you can make life and beauty out of anything.”

Materials used: Plastic drink bottles

Skills taught: Re-purposing plastic bottles, starting seeds, planting flowers.
