Emanuel Taranu

Emanuel was born in Romania in 1987. As a child growing up in the States, he was often looking for more in the suburban landscape than strip malls and the consumption of cheap goods. After graduating with a BFA in sculpture, he revisited his roots in the Eastern European country of Romania and returned with a mission to explore the potential and problems of his own hometown of St. Louis, MO.

With helpful collaboration with others, Emanuel has spent the last five years developing the practice he calls Citizen Carpentry: an exploration of how community groups, skill-sharing, and local solidarity-based economies can open up a society to healthful growth. By re-examining the city’s own materials, spaces, and people, he believes we can redefine work to create economic, ecological and social justice for everyone.
