THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT! Other workshops will be scheduled in Fall 2021.
Join the creative folks at Perennial (Community Workshop) for this workshop to earn your Textiles Merit Badge! In this 2-hour virtual workshop, you’ll learn all about different fiber terminology, and make some textile projects, too! After a discussion, you’ll mix up a few natural plant dyes, and use the dye to color some fabric swatches + a bandana. Please have two cooking pots, stove, and water to make these dyes! You’ll also get the chance to waterproof a fabric using a natural wax mixture that you’ll heat up in a jar on the stove, so you will need an iron handy for this workshop as well! The iron will be protected from the wax via parchment paper provided in the kit.
Since Perennial is all about sustainability and working with reclaimed materials, you will learn how to reuse materials from your home in a way that’s beneficial for the environment.
There are several prerequisites to this workshop. In your workbook, please complete #4 and #5 and email scans or photos to email@example.com prior to the workshop. Your merit badge counselor will review and approve your answers. We will also discuss many of the concepts in the workshop.
From the badge requirements, we will complete #1, #2, #3b, #3e, and #6.
This is a virtual workshop that will be conducted via Zoom. You will be sent a link to participate in the workshop a few days before the scheduled time. You must pickup a kit of materials containing a few natural dyes (likely black walnuts and turmeric), fabric, wax mixture, and a brush. Kits may be picked up on Thursday-Saturday, July 22-24, from 11am to 5pm each day.
