Skills you’ll learn:
Making a loom, weaving, working with natural dyes, identifying different fibers
Join the creative folks at Perennial (Community Workshop) for this workshop to earn your Textiles Merit Badge! In this 2-hour virtual workshop, you’ll learn all about different fiber terminology, and make some textile projects, too! After a discussion, you’ll make a simple cardboard loom, which we will use to weave a mat with reclaimed t-shirt yarn. You’ll also get to mix up a few natural dyes, and use the dye to color some fabric swatches.
Since Perennial is all about sustainability and working with reclaimed materials, you will learn how to reuse materials from your home in a way that’s beneficial for the environment.
There are several prerequisites to this workshop. In your workbook, please complete #4 and #5. Your merit badge counselor will review and approve your answers. We will also discuss many of the concepts in the workshop.
From the badge requirements, we will complete #1, #2, #3b, #3e, and #6.
This is a virtual workshop that will be conducted via Zoom. You will be sent a link to participate in the workshop a few days before the scheduled time. You must pickup a kit of materials containing a few natural dyes (likely black walnuts and turmeric), fabric, cardboard, t-shirt yarn, string and a needle. Kits may be picked up on Friday, July 10 from 11am – 5pm.
