Japanese stab binding, also known as Fukuro Toji (bound-pocket books), is an artist’s bookmaking technique that employs a simple, classic sewing process to make a soft cover album. Participants in this class will learn paper folding, tearing, and sewing techniques using traditional bookbinders tools such as a bone folder and awl. Participants are invited to use their own decorative paper (at least 6″x 12″) to personalize their covers, or use what Perennial provides! Participants will learn the fundamentals of cutting and preparing paper to create a ‘tortoiseshell’ bound book. We’ll cover ways to create books out of materials in your own home, too!
