Why Community Workshop?

Perennial envisions a world where resources are shared rather than overproduced. We wanted to build a space where people could use their creative skills to make, mend, fix, repair, reimagine and build their own dream diy projects. Plus, not everyone has the funds or space to buy their own tools. Even when they are purchased many tools are lonely, only used for occasional projects. The solution? Community Workshop, a place where creative folks can work on independent projects in the company of other inspirational builders + makers.

What is Community Workshop?

Community Workshop is an open studio program that happens every Saturday from 1:00 – 5:00pm at Perennial. During this time, you’ll have access to our space, tools, and supplies to work on your own creative reuse projects for only $15 per session. Sessions are scheduled from 1:00-3:00pm and 3:00-5:00pm.

Perennial staff will be on-hand to offer reuse tips, advice, and tool troubleshooting in both our Woodshop and Reuse Studio (including sewing, mosaics, soldering, and all other non-woodworking projects). It is strongly recommended that you sign up for a session in advance through our website, otherwise we cannot guarantee that space will be available to you. Drop-ins on the day of the program are permitted as long as we have space, and are at the discretion of the staff.

Who can come to Community Workshop?

Community Workshop is open to everyone over the age of 16, who has taken a Perennial class and wants to put those skills to work!

To use power tools in the Woodshop, you must have taken a Tools 101 class on that tool, or you may use hand tools if you have not taken a Tools 101 class. To use the Reuse Studio, you must have taken a Perennial class in the medium you wish to work (i.e. any soldering class to use the soldering irons, Wine Bottle Reuse to cut wine bottles, Sewing Machine Basics to use sewing machines, etc.)

Community Workshop is designed for folks who can work on self-led projects with little guidance. It is NOT meant to be a replacement for a class. You should come in with a rough plan/concept, inspiration images and potentially a pattern or measurements. Staff are on-site to assist with tool questions and to offer feedback. If you are wondering if Community Workshop is a good fit for you and your project, please contact classes@perennialstl.org to find out. If this is your first project at Community Workshop, see our FAQ page for examples of reasonable introductory projects.

How much does Community Workshop Cost?

Community Workshop costs $15 per 2-hour session / $30 for the day (4-hours). As a non-profit Perennial works to keep these sessions affordable and the funds raised help cover staffing costs and tool upkeep. Sessions are scheduled from 1:00 – 3:00pm and 3:00 – 5:00pm every Saturday unless noted otherwise.

Consumable materials are not included in the cost of your Community Workshop fee. Pay-by-pound for salvaged project materials, including wood, fabrics, glass, ceramics, paper products and more! Purchase eco-friendly milk paint, soy gel, natural dye + beauty supplies, and waxes in bulk.

For folks who attend four 2-hour Community Workshop sessions, you get a fifth session free! Details for redemption will be sent via email to those who qualify.
